Competition Categories

I have had a quick think about what constitutes each of our competition categories. Please add on anything relevant to my thoughts or disagree with what I've suggested
I have highlighted in red a starting point for the wording for any guidelines we agree on
BEGINNERS Do we have a time limit on someone staying in the beginners section and do we consider a beginner as someone new to serious SLR ( or Digital )photography ?
A member who joins the club in the beginners section must have recently taken up photography as a hobby and will spend no more than TWO years in this section. If the member wins the beginners section in their first year of membership they will advance to the Intermediate section
ADVANCED Any member winning the intermediate section will progress to the advanced section. This will be more relevant in years to come but I would propose that anyone who has won either the print or slide/PI competition will enter themselves in this section.
A member who has won the intermediate category will progess to the advanced section
INTERMEDIATE this category will cover everyone else ?
A member who has been in the club for TWO years or won the beginners section will be considered in the INTERMEDIATE section
Any member who joins from another club will be expected to join a category similar to that of their previous club
For the first year it is going to be up to each member to join the section they think is the most appropriate.

Hi Gordon,
I agree -
A beginner is someone who is new to photography
.
The other definitions are fine!
Can I make a suggestion - that we stop calling them "Competitions" as we have our images "Appraised" now, with outside (of our club) Appraisers (no one wants to be called a judge now). No one comes in 1st 2nd and 3rd in our "Competitions" any more. As we now get a score, and there can be several (depending on the appraiser) perfect scores - 20's in each event.
For a beginner entering in a photo competition can be a daunting task. To have your images judged against other members images can be a discouragement to participation. Which on a whole, is to the club's loss. Where as having an image appraised can be a learning experience for the participant as well as everybody else. And we would get to see more images as more people participate.
How about we call them "Appraisal Nights"
Best - Willie
