Can I suggest that all the beginner competitions be Open. For example if Macro is chosen as a category that would be hard enough for those of us with limited equipment but for beginners I think its just not on.

Good point from Jim, although we should be making the appraisers aware of this so they dont mark down or disqualify an image they dont think meets the theme. 

The other alternative is that if we do have macro as a theme, we have a night in the club that we can give beginners the chance to try it and get their images before the competition.  Most of us have Canon or Nikon gear, and I would be happy to let others use my macro lens on the night.
