The Equaliser Competition will be held on Wed April 11th along with the portfolio competition. At the moment the subject is The Calders. Because of the wide geographic spread of the membership we may change the subject if the membership requests it. I have devised a poll to give members a chance to vote for a change or not. Please vote in the next 10 days your choice. One vote per member.

EQUALISER COMPETITION is held every year in memory of former member Alpin Ross-Smith who left a small sum of money to the club when he tragically died a number of years ago. The original idea was to in some way "equalise" all the members to produce an image using a specific method for that year. In the past ( ie when film was king ) it was quite easy as we had disposable camera competitions, black and white slides etc etc. Since digital has come along it has made it very difficult to embrace the original concept . It was decided a number of years the equalising component would be the subject matter. We have had competitions with Mid Calder, Mid Calder Church amongst others as the subject matter. The subject was changed to " The Calders " a few years ago but since the club numbers have grown it is felt that perhaps we should look at the subject criteria again- Hence the poll

I'm not sure that we are actually "equalising" this by these choices.
Yes, we are a West Lothian based club so at first sight "The Calders"; "Mid Calder"; "West Lothian"; seem fair choices. But we need to remember that we now have members from Edinburgh, Falkirk, and Balerno, none of which is in West Lothian and all of which require a degree of travel to reach any of these suggested locations.
The "My Village" choice also rules out residents of all three (though you might argue that Balerno is a village).
Maybe we need to re-name the choices - "Where I Live"?

I like Steve's topic idea of "Where I live," which is open to interpretation - from an architectural shot of their village's iconic church to a portrait of their sofa.

I think this is the wrong time to be bringing this subject up. We should be discussing this after this years competition.
I won't be voting till then. George R
